Artist Inspiration

Rachel Whiteread - Jewish memorial in Vienna

The Jewish memorial is a concrete library made up of row after row of outward facing books. The structure is unique in that the viewer can see the books closed pages instead of the spine of the cover which is how books are normally assembled on library bookcases. Whiteread's initial plan was to make the concrete less porous as she wanted the rain to get in therfore ageing the structure giving it a 'sorry appearance.'

This piece of work influenced my material choice of plaster when casting books as it captures every crease, indentation and individual page edges.

Glass and resin book structures

These are some pieces i created at the start of 2nd year in sculpture. I am interested in the notion of a 'book'. I wanted to experiment with materials i hadnt used before such as glass and resin. My inspiration for this project came from old books as they are mundane objects however capture time and memory in each and every page. This lead to my decision of using brown resin for the resin book as i found it had ethemereal qualities and reflects the pages within an old book yellowing as they age.

My interests are based on the book form, rather than text within the book. I want the viewer to interpret the work in their own individual way, however see past the text as this is not the main emphasis of my sculptures. Here i have made positive and negative casts of the open book showing my interest in the depth and shape of the object.

Jacqueline Rush Lee - Endoskeleton 2000

Jacqueline is a Hawaiian artist who uses a vast number of experimental techniques to transform books such as kiln firing which she has perfected and soaking books in water winding them into wheel or square shapes. I alike Jacqueline have an interest in book art. I have used similar processes such as soaking books in water as i am fascinated in the crinkles, and indentations that are revealed when the book is removed from the plaster cast. By soaking old books ive also discovered that the ink bleeds into the plaster so leaves a 'ghost-like' text embedded onto the plaster surface.
